- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ cup butter melted and slightly cooled
- 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup plain yogurt or sour cream
- 1 ½ cups (2 medium) apples peeled, cored, and chopped
- 4 tbsp butter 3 tbsp browned and 1 tbsp softened
- 4 oz cream cheese softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp salt

Bake the Cake
Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 8x8 or 9x9 pan with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
In a large bowl, whisk melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth.
Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in sour cream.
Fold in dry ingredients until just combined. Stir in apples.
Spread into prepared pan and bake 30–38 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
Make the Frosting
In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Continue cooking until golden brown with a nutty aroma (3–5 minutes). Pour into a heat-safe bowl and cool until partially solidified.
In a mixing bowl, beat 4 oz cream cheese until smooth. Add browned butter and softened butter and mix until combined.
Beat in powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt until fluffy.
Spread over cooled cake.
